Medical officer doubts listeria behind camp illnesses

Nova Scotia's chief physician says he's almost certain a late spate of illnesses at a camp near Amherst is not linked to a national outbreak of listeriosis.

Seven workers at Camp Tidnish got sick late last week. A camp spokeswoman aforesaid they complained of headaches, nausea and vomiting some of the same symptoms of listeriosis. The camp had some of the recalled meat, which is now being tried for the listeria bacteria.

But Dr. Robert Strang, headman medical officer for Nova Scotia, doubts listeria is to blame for the camp illnesses.

"From the type of symptoms we ar seeing their continuance, the implicit in age and health position of the individuals we truly don't believe that this is listeria meningitis," he told CBC News Tuesday.

"It's not unusual during the summer to see clusters of gastrointestinal unwellness in a summer camp setting."

Only one of the Camp Tidnish workers is still sick of, Strang said.

People who eat foods contaminated with listeria may run the bacterium and non develop listeriosis. Those at risk of getting grim are the very offspring, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.

Federal public health officials confirmed 26 cases of listeriosis on Monday, including 12 deaths. None of the cases are in Nova Scotia, Strang said.

About 220 Maple Leaf Foods products are on a voluntary meat recall list. On Tuesday, Atlantic Prepared Foods Ltd. aforementioned it was recalling its Irving, Sub Delicious and Needs brand sandwiches, which are sold in the Maritime provinces.

Strang said there are almost five quarantined cases of listeriosis in Nova Scotia a year.

Originally purpose success as the singer/frontman of Seattle's Soundgarden, Chris Cornell besides forged a successful solo calling later the band's 1997 death. Born in Seattle on July 20, 1964, Cornell's music occupational group didn't carry shape until he was a adolescent, playing drums in bands that sundry punk/new wave (the Police) and metallic element (AC/DC) covers. Although he exhausted most of his teenaged old age reclusive and as a lone savage, rock confect music helped Cornell defeat his inquietude around others. After falling out of high schoolhouse school and working as a cook, Cornell formed a band that, with a few lineup changes, would become the majuscule and influential Soundgarden by the mid-'80s. Cornell switched to vocals close to the clip of the band's formation, with ally Hiro Yamamoto on fresh water bass, Kim Thayil on guitar, and eventually, Matt Cameron on drums.

Along with the Melvins, Soundgarden was one of the first-class honours degree rock-and-roll bands to slow down pat punk's vernal vitality to a Black Sabbath-like crawl. First issuance a few releases on self-governing labels (Sub Pop's Screaming Life and Fopp EPs, SST's Ultramega OK), Soundgarden was one of the first-class honours degree bands of the late-'80s Seattle underground to sign with a major tag, A&M, which issued Louder Than Love in 1989. After the album's release, all the same, Yamamoto left and was first-class honours degree replaced by ex-Nirvana member Jason Everman, and finally for good by Ben Shepherd. With Soundgarden's quintessential lineup in place, the band rightfully became ane of rock's virtually popular bands on the forcefulness of such albums as 1991's Badmotorfinger, 1994's Superunknown, and 1996's Down on the Upside. With each record album, Cornell's singing grew stronger and stronger and farther away from the heavy metallic element screaming of the band's other work and more toward a true vocalizing style. Cornell also showed a majuscule talent for lyric-writing; spell his lyrics wouldn't cook good sense if read without the music, they evoked all kinds of images when he put the two together.

Likewise Cornell's brobdingnagian talents displayed with Soundgarden, he organized a protection for late Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood in the form of 1990's Temple of the Dog propose, which was far more stripped-down. Cornell's first officially released solo composing, the acoustic "Seasons," was the highlight of the 1992 motion impression soundtrack Singles. His bluesy voice also worked surprisingly intimately on a brilliant cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)" on the 1993 Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix compiling (under the anonym MACC). He too ground clock time to pen songs for former acts of the Apostles, such as Flotsam & Jetsam and Alice Cooper, as well as producing the Screaming Trees' 1991 button Uncle Anesthesia. After Soundgarden's death in April of 1997, Cornell slowly just sure enough began to set a solo album together with his friends from the band Eleven.

Finally issued in 1999, Euphoria Morning was a difference from his former band's sound, as it was in a more singer/songwriter mold, which focused more on Cornell's vocals and lyrics than substantive guitar riffs. Shortly after its release, Cornell launched his first solo duty tour, commixture songs from all eras of his career. After wrapping up the aforesaid duty tour in early 2000, a lukewarm remix of the Euphoria Morning track "Mission" (retitled "Mission 2000") was included on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack. It appeared as though Cornell would title a break from music for a piece, as his married woman gave parentage to the couple's number one tiddler in June of the same twelvemonth, simply by late 2000, Cornell launch himself involved in a picture that promised to be a classical hard rock 'n' roll quislingism.

Passion Against the Machine decided not to break up after longtime singer Zack de la Rocha left wing the stria that winter, simply sooner they would discover another isaac Bashevis Singer and dribble on under a different refer. Cornell accepted an invitation to jam and pen a few songs (which early Rage guitar player Tom Morello described as "in truth groundbreaking") and, shortly thereafter, formally joined forces with the former Rage members under the nickname Audioslave. Produced by Rick Rubin, the band's self-titled debut arrived in November 2002 and went multi-platinum. The followup, 2005's Out of Exile, debuted at number unmatchable on the Billboard charts and was followed by the platinum-selling Revelations in 2006. Cornell left wing the stria that same year, citing the usual "irreconcilable differences," and began work on his second solo record, 2007's Carry On, a topical, biographic, and musically befuddled whirlwind featuring a cover version of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" and "You Know My Name" from the Bond film Casino Royale.

KCRW's Harry Shearer to Receive Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 19 -- Radio personality ...
actor ... author ... director ... comedian ... musician ... philosopher ...
political satirist ... multimedia artist ... and one of the best "voices"
in the business (just ask "The Simpsons"), HARRY SHEARER is one of the most
prolific entertainers of this -- or any -- generation. Today, The Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce's Walk of Fame Committee announced that Harry Shearer
is one of two LA-based radio personalities who will be honored with a star
on Hollywood's Walk of Fame next year.

For 25 years, Harry Shearer has been dissecting headlines,
impersonating news makers, creating topical songs, writing/acting/producing
sketches about political figures, news anchors and entertainers, and
inventing unique feature segments and characters for Le Show, his weekly
Sunday morning program, produced for and distributed nationwide by 89.9
KCRW-Santa Monica and http://www.KCRW.com. Le Show is one of the station's most
popular podcasts -- available here: (http://www.KCRW.com/etc/programs/ls). He
writes, produces and presents all of the material on the show himself.

Vogue magazine called Le Show "a wildly clever, iconoclastic stew of
talk, music, political commentary, readings of inadvertently funny public
documents or trade magazines and scripted skits." Los Angeles Magazine
described Harry's talent for writing and performing this way: "Shearer is a
one-man renaissance assault force on the conventions of our culture and a
much-needed antidote to the current gloom and doom."

An LA native and child actor, Shearer appeared on radio with Jack Benny
and in the pilot episode of TV's "Leave it to Beaver" as Eddie Haskell. A
political science major at UCLA in the early 60s (where he was a writer and
editor for the school's humor magazine), Shearer also did graduate work at
Harvard and served a political internship in Sacramento. As a freelance
journalist, Shearer covered the Watts riots for Newsweek before teaching
high school English for two years in South Central Los Angeles. He cut his
performance and satirical teeth with the legendary 70s stage troupe, "The
Credibility Gap," writing for, producing and performing on their albums and
tours.

Shearer's TV work currently includes "THE SIMPSONS," the longest
running primetime animated series, where he is never seen but always heard
as three of the show's leading characters (Mr. Burns, Smithers and Ned
Flanders) as well as dozens of other "friends" who visit the Simpson
family. Other television credits include "Saturday Night Live," "Murphy
Brown" and "Chicago Hope," to name just a few, and he starred in his own
HBO hour-long special: "Comedy Hour Live: The Magic of Live." He is a
two-time Cable Ace Award winner for his rap music video "Shredding Party,"
and "The News Hole," a current events gameshow. These days, he appears in
his own productions on "My Damn Channel," an Internet-based entertainment
website.

Shearer earned multi-media artist status by creating several acclaimed
museum exhibits of public figures, captured via satellite in silence as
they waited for their television interviews to begin. The Museum of
Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles presented Shearer's installation,
Wall Of Silence, featuring key figures from the O.J. Simpson Trial in their
least soundbite-stealing moments.

Shearer, along with his wife, singer-songwriter Judith Owen, created
Courgette Records; among other albums, they released Shearer's CD "Songs
Pointed and Pointless," which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2007. His
new CD, "Songs of the Bushmen," will be released July 7 as a digital
download at http://www.harryshearer.com.

KCRW congratulates Harry Shearer and all of today's announced Walk of
Fame star-honorees: Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Cameron Diaz, Robert
Downey Jr., Tim Burton, Leslie Caron, Charles Durning, Ralph Fiennes,
William Petersen, Kyra Sedgwick, John Stamos, Mark Burnett, Chuck Lorre,
Kenny "Baby Face" Edmonds, Dave Koz, The Miracles, Doug Morris, Rush,
Shakira, KFI radio personality Bill Handel.

Norway film celebrates revival

Norwegian film industry arrives in force in Cannes

Cannes -- The Norwegian film industry has arrived in force in Cannes, riding high on the recent boxoffice surge of local titles and accompanied by an a odd, teepee-like structure now pitched on the lawn outside the Grand Hotel.

The traditional structure -- called a "sami lavvo" in case you're wondering -- is part of a marketing gimmick to promote Nils Gaup's historical saga "The Kautokeino Rebellion," which has been a huge hit at home. But it is also emblematic of a new sense of confidence pouring out of Norway.

The country's three main film financing bodies merged last month to form a single centralized body to divvy up about $60 million in production subsidies every year and Norway's oil-rich government has set ambitious growth targets.

By 2010, Norway wants local films to account for a quarter of the national boxoffice -- up from last year's 16% -- and to double the international sales revenue for Norwegian titles.

Finance done on 'American Graffiti'-style saga

Film is Patrick Read Johnson's autobiographical indie

CANNES -- The WMA/Hannaywood Ltd.'s Beverly Bridge Fund will complete financing on Patrick Read Johnson's autobiographical indie "77," which chronicles the director's journeys in Hollywood with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

The film, originally named "5/25/77" after the release date of "Star Wars," is a nostalgic take on the director's encounters with Industrial Light and Magic execs. "Freaks and Geeks" lead John Francis Daley stars.

BBF will provide the film with $200,000 in funding and prep it for a Toronto debut, with sales repped by WMI. "It's an 'American Graffiti'-style film about the people who made 'American Graffitti,'" WMI's Cassian Elwes said.
